Oceanium, ambassador center for the international guidelines for responsible divers, has reached its goal in planting 30 millions of mangroves in less than three months.
The reforestation campaign, which mobilized more than 78,000 people and 323 villages, enables to plant more than 34,7 millions of propagulis (young mangrove plants or mangrove trees) in the Senegalese regions of Casamance and Sine Saloum, from the 31st of July until 1st November 2009. In Casamance, more than 27 millions of mangroves trees have been planted and close to 8 millions in Sine Saloum.
Thanks to this tremendous action, the mangrove has grown by 6,000 hectares ! This future forest is made up of trees growing “the feet in the sea”, along the coastlines. In this country, where the forests are ravaged by the huge number of bush fires and the cattle overgrazing, the mangrove which is growing into the muddy shores will have a great opportunity to stay away from these causes of damages.

But the mangrove is more than a mere forest. Because its trees are perched on their roots which, like stilts, are bearing them above the water level. They are forming a giant network of tangled roots where numerous sea animals are breeding, where the young fishes are growing safe from predators. The mangroves are the nurseries of the tropical regions. The mangrove revival makes sure the sea life revival as well.
For the first time all over the world, 30 millions of trees have been planted in three months. But the Oceanium is now willing to reach a yearly achievement of 100 millions of plants thanks to the concept of “villages twinning” which will allow them to reforest together.
On the eve of the Copenhagen conference about the climate, where the deforestation will be a core topic, the successful action of Oceanium demonstrates that the mobilization of everybody is possible and the best answer to the threats that are hanging over our future.
