European Shark week 2009 :
new action

Posté Vendredi 18 Septembre 2009 par Véronique

For the third year in a row, Longitude 181 Nature and the 70 NGOs involved In Shark Alliance are launching a new campaign for the European Shark Week 2009 taking place from 10th to 18th October 2009.

In April 2009, thanks to people mobilized to petition and thanks to the 10,000 signatures collected from all over Europe, we finally achieved the adoption of the first European Plan of Action for Sharks which reinforces the Finning ban (cutting off a shark’s fins and discarding its body at sea).

The next step is to enforce this Plan. In this respect, each country has to integrate these protection measures in its national laws as soon as possible.

In a number of countries, the decision will not be long in coming, but others will do their best in delaying the process, especially Spain, which, since the beginning of the process, is trying to weaken the EU ban on "Finning".

Now, Spain is the most important shark fishing country in Europe. It takes advantage of the gaps in the EU regulations allowing the fishing boats with a special permit to cut the shark fins at sea and to disembark sharks fins and bodies separately. Moreover Spain is the country which grants the highest number of special permits in EU and nothing is done by that country to limit shark fishing in a responsible way.

Il faut donc que les citoyens européens fassent pression afin que l’Espagne change de cap. So European citizens have to put pressure on Spanish government to get a significant move from it.

A petition in order to convince Spain to ban the Finning

This is why Longitude 181 Nature, with the other NGOs involved in Shark Alliance, decided to concentrate the pressure in a petition referred to Spanish government. To do so we need your help. The goal is ambitious: to drawn the Prime Minister, Jose Luis Zapatero under more than 100,000 signatures!

As the first shark fishing country In Europe, it is the responsibility of Spain to promote their protection!

You can download this petition HERE to let it circulate around you.

Thank for supporting the action!
